ELDT Training: What's Changed in 2026

The FMCSA's Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) regulations have been around for a few years now, but 2026 brought some important updates. If you're starting your CDL journey, here's what you need to know.

New Theory Hour Minimums

Effective January 2026, the FMCSA increased the minimum theory instruction hours for Class A and Class B CDL applicants. The new baseline is 30 hours of classroom or online theory training before you can take your skills test. This is up from the previously recommended 20 hours.

Updated Documentation Requirements

Training providers now need to submit additional documentation to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry (TPR) within 24 hours of completing a student's training. This includes more detailed records of which specific theory topics were covered and for how long.

What This Means for You

If you're using CDL Study Buddy's ELDT training, you're covered — our courses already meet or exceed the new requirements. We updated our curriculum in February to align with the new hour minimums.
